Work in Britain with the UK Jobs Foreigners Want

UK jobs for foreignersJolly old Great Britain is one of the premiere destinations in the world to work. As a result, UK jobs are a sought-after commodity for international workers.

In fact, the UK is among the globe’s most globalized economies. Perhaps aside from New York City, London is the world’s foremost center for financial activity, and it has the highest GDP (by city) in all of Europe. The UK is also among the world’s leaders in its aerospace and pharmaceutical industries. Additionally, the country has a vibrant and growing technology sector where skilled employees are constantly in high demand. Along with the country’s strong currency, these factors make the UK a major place for finding the jobs foreigners want.

Getting UK Jobs for Foreigners

Nationals of European Economic Area (EEA) countries — all countries of the EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway — and Swiss Nationals are able to work in the UK without applying for special visas or permits. And like many of the world’s other major economic powerhouses, the UK also welcomes skilled foreigners to its shores as part of a larger effort to remain competitive.

However, you’ll need a work permit or visa if you come from a non-EEA country (and are not a Swiss citizen). To get a work permit, you’ll need to find a job with a UK company willing to sponsor you. Some of the most common industries for sponsorship include construction, engineering, social work, town planning and legal work. Jobs in high-demand sectors, particularly in technology, are also prime for sponsorship.

For those hoping to live and work in Britain with one of these UK jobs, the UK’s points-based tier system is basically the only route. The points-based assessment for each tier require applicants to score a certain number of points to gain entry or to extend their time in the United Kingdom. Here are the 5 Tiers of work permits for UK jobs:

  • Tier 1 – High Value Immigrants: The Tier 1 visa has categories for people of exceptional talent, entrepreneurs, investors and graduate entrepreneurs.
  • Tier 2 – Skilled Workers: The Tier 2 is for high-skilled workers who have job offers from UK companies. Categories for UK visa jobs include general workers, ministers of religion, athletes / sports players, and intra-company transfers.
  • Tier 3 – Temporary Low-Skill Labor (Closed): This category was set up for low-skilled workers filling specific temporary labor shortages. While it is currently closed, the visa could be re-opened if need arises.
  • Tier 4 – International Students: The Tier 4 is for foreign students wishing to study in the UK. It allows them to work part-time (up to 20 hours a week) while in school, and full-time while on Holiday.
  • Tier 5 – Temporary Workers & Youth Mobility:This category is for youth mobility and temporary workers, such as those who come under Working Holiday agreements with other countries.

How to Live & Work in Britain With a UK Job

While each visas is different in terms of its purposes and criteria, you should note that all of the Tiers (except for Tier 1) require sponsorship. And to do that, you have to be hired a UK employer or accepted by an educational organization that will file a visa for you.

To make this happen, you need to apply to the right places at the right time with the right organizations/employers. Specifically, you need to target employers / organizations that have a proven record of sponsoring international people for UK work visas.
